Best quality food and façade – Kingspan equips Europe’s largest vegetable retailer with energy efficient QuadCore® panels
28,000 square metres of space, state-of-the-art refrigeration technology, attractive design – that is the new logistics centre of the Pfalzmarkt cooperative in Mutterstadt. The alliance of 120 local businesses specialises in the production and storage as well as the transport, distribution and sale of fresh and sustainably produced fruit and vegetables. The building complex for the temporary storage of the goods had to meet the highest standards accordingly – especially in terms of insulation, energy efficiency and thermal protection. At the same time, the design of the building had to reflect the demands of the project. Kingspan GmbH meets all these requirements with its innovative QuadCore® wall panels that convince with their good insulating properties and durability, but above all with their energy efficiency and cost-effectiveness.
As part of a site expansion, the new distribution centre for fruit and vegetables is located directly at the Mutterstadt motorway junction on the A65/A61 motorways and is one of the largest and most modern of its kind in Europe. The aim of the expansion was to create the conditions for the future viability and further sustainable growth of the producers’ cooperative. This has been achieved with the realisation of this project.
In order to be able to maintain the desired quality of the stored fresh food from delivery to dispatch to the retailers, the building complex had to be equipped with high-quality and reliable components that, above all, permanently guarantee thermal protection and temperature control. Against the backdrop of rising operating costs and increased demands in terms of climate protection, the aspects of energy efficiency and cost-effectiveness played an important role. Last but not least, the building should also convince with its design, which is based on the corporate identity of the association and is an eye-catcher from afar.
Sandwich panels for high demands
The KS1150 NF sandwich panel with QuadCore® insulation core and the KS1150 FR sandwich panel were used in the construction of the logistics hall. The QuadCore® sandwich panel not only has good insulating properties but is also durable and has a low self-weight. The joint geometry is ideally suited for cold storage and can be arranged both horizontally and vertically. It is therefore perfectly suited to the requirements of a fresh food warehouse such as the one in Mutterstadt, as the excellent energy efficiency ensures a constant temperature in the interior. Due to its outstanding insulation and thermal conductivity, QuadCore® also contributes to the reduction of C02 footprint .Meanwhile, the KS1150 FR sandwich panel with mineral wool insulation core impresses with its high fire resistance duration and fire protection class of A2-s1,d0 in accordance with EN 13501-1 due to its excellent fire protection properties.
Colourful and richly contrasting design
The fact that Kingspan panels can be designed in different colours also benefited the project. The building is made particularly eye-catching by the striking play of colours on its façade. Different shades of green contrasting with the complementary colour red, arranged in an easily recognisable and creative barcode pattern, give the project a unique look and reflect the cooperative’s corporate design. The design also evokes the colour palette of the fruits and vegetables produced by the participating farms.
