More than just a façade – QuadCore® sandwich panels from Kingspan to cover the distribution centre in Bakum

In the course of a growing awareness of sustainable building, architects, planners and builders are increasingly turning to materials that are environmentally friendly. This is why Kingspan façade panels were used for a distribution centre in Bakum (Lower Saxony). The QuadCore® sandwich elements not only have good insulating properties but are also durable and have a low self-weight. A total of 6,000 square metres of the façade panels were installed in this project.

Online trade is growing. This development is leading to an increased need for distribution centres. According to experts, the demand for logistics real estate is set to double by 2025. The concept of sustainability is also becoming increasingly important in this type of building architecture. For example, project participants are increasingly relying on energy-efficient construction methods to reduce the ecological footprint of the buildings. The choice of building materials and resources was also a key issue in the realisation of a distribution centre in Bakum, Lower Saxony.

QuadCore® technology

That’s why the decision makers opted for QuadCore® panels from Kingspan with a closed-cell hybrid core that has particularly good insulating properties. The sandwich elements have a lambda value of 0.018 watts per metre and Kelvin (W/mK). This makes them highly efficient – heat losses are reduced to a minimum, room temperatures remain constant and the space requirement is very low due to the thin material thickness of 80 millimetres. In addition, the panels can be recycled.

Durability through coating
As a further design element, the exterior and interior of the QuadCore® panel have two different profiles – Eurobox and Minibox. The panels are finished with a 50 micron thick coating. This provides UV and corrosion protection and ensures the colour and gloss resistance of the surface. It is particularly resistant to weathering and therefore durable. This ensures that the façade panels remain in perfect condition, both visually and technically, even after years of use.

Uncomplicated and quick processing
The panels are made of hard foam and are fibre-free. Additional protective clothing such as goggles or masks were not necessary during installation. The low self-weight also made it possible to complete the building envelope quickly. With the help of a crane, the individual sandwich elements could be lifted and screwed to the substructure. Visible fastening was used for this. On site, between 35 and 40 panels could be easily installed in one day by two teams. The installation was carried out by R. Dekker Dachdecker GmbH from Wildeshausen – a company that can already look back on several years of cooperation with Kingspan. Sustainability also plays a major role at the company – its fleet of electric vehicles, for example, is constantly being expanded. The load-bearing elements of the building structure benefit from the light weight – the lower loads could be taken into account accordingly in the dimensioning of the supporting structure. The latter also prove advantageous during transport – more material can be transported per truck load. This has a positive effect on the environment, as fewer journeys are necessary and CO2 emissions are saved accordingly.
